Taught by Bill Steele, The Basics of Utility Accounting and Ratemaking provides an introduction to the processes, general principles, and terms used in financial accounting and reporting by regulated utilities. It addresses items of particular importance for utility regulation, including investments in capital, depreciation, and the Uniform System of Accounts. Examples from the utility industry are used to illustrate key concepts and calculations.
Whether you are new to ratemaking or a veteran who would like a refresher in ratemaking concepts, this course will provide you with the nuts and bolts of Ratemaking 101. The concepts covered in the course will benefit anyone that participates in rate cases, as an attorney, an engineer, an accountant, an economist, or a policy maker. This course is an introductory level overview of the rate making process. Students wanting a more detailed, hands on experience with developing a rate case are encouraged to follow this course with the NARUC Rate School.
