NARUC has a variety of on-demand training options available on a wide range of utility topics. The on-demand style of these trainings provides a flexible option for individuals to learn about topics at their own pace, whenever and wherever they choose. NARUC offers both paid and free options.
In partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy, NARUC hosts virtual training events with experts on electricity-related topics throughout each year. Training topics include electricity system planning, distribution systems and planning, innovations in electricity modeling, bulk power system issues, smart grid, and EV interoperability. Shorter, more succinct training sessions ranging from 3 to 30 minutes are available in addition to longer, more in-depth training classes ranging from 60 to 180 minutes.
In partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy, NARUC is pleased to provide utility commissions with dozens of training videos dubbed into Spanish. Topics include: an introduction to regulation, distribution systems and planning, bulk power system issues, innovations in electricity modeling, smart grid and electric vehicle interoperability, and more. Videos range from 3 to 70 minutes long and feature expert speakers and NARUC members sharing their experiences.

NARUC’s Regulatory Training Initiative (RTI) provides pre-recorded training courses to regulators, commission staff, and stakeholders to increase their knowledge of regulatory issues and processes. The courses focus on the principles of regulation, as well as the key skills required to participate in regulatory proceedings, such as regulatory accounting and finance, cost-benefit analysis, and the fundamentals of utility law. Classes are generally 6 hours long, provided over three modules.
